Financial education in Wales

The Welsh Government are fully committed to tackling financial exclusion. Financial education is embedded in the revised school curriculum, introduced in maintained schools in Wales from September 2008.

Building on the skills and outcomes of the Foundation Phase, the Welsh Assembly Government has ensured that financial education is embedded in the curriculum, principally in mathematics, introduced in maintained schools in Wales from September 2008 for 7-16 year olds.

In addition, specific elements of financial education have been included in the Personal and social education framework for 7 to 19-year-olds in Wales and Careers and the world of work: a framework for 11 to 19-year-olds in Wales. This provides schools and colleges with a unique opportunity to instill positive attitudes towards finance at an early age, by developing learners’ knowledge and skills within specific disciplines as well as through cross-curricular approaches to learning.

Financial education provides an excellent context for learning across the curriculum, and can provide a context for the challenges that form part of the Welsh Baccalaureate Award.
